Music video commission for hip-hop artist using motion graphics and kinetic typography.



The client had approached me to create an animated music video for their new song. They did not want an overly complex animation as they wanted people to focus on their lyrics. They had seen other kinetic typography music videos online and wanted something similar created.



A text script of the lyrics was provided however no other concept graphics or artwork was given. The client had allowed me complete freedom with the style but had requested that the video try to use graphics where possible rather than be full text only animation. For this, I used a mix of graphics to match the words literally and also other graphics to convey my interpretation of the lyric's concept in addition to the text animation.

The trickiest part was definitely working out the proper timing. Sometimes the animation for a song line did not finish at the same tempo as the spoken line which made it difficult to synchronize. Rather than finishing the animation for each line before the next started, I focused more on the flow of transitions between each line and found that the animation blended smoothly on its own.

​The quick tempo of song was also a challenge as I'm not used to working with hip-hop songs so this was quite the learning experience but an enjoyable one nonetheless. The client was very pleased with the end result and has already commissioned for a second music video to be created.
